There are few series that have garnered such a cult following as 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'. Whether the fans have come from the radio series, the (impossibly hard) computer game, or the (well intentioned but not particularly good) film, they are everywhere. Ask a room of people what the meaning of life is, and you can be pretty sure a good few will pipe up with '42' as the answer.
The tale of Arthur Dent - a fairly everyday English man who escaped the destruction of Earth (destroyed to make away for a intergalactic bypass), and joined up with ex-galactic president Zaphod Beeblebrox, journalist and space hitchhiker Ford Prefect, Islington native and space traveller Trillian, and Marvin the Paranoid Android - a robot afflicted with both severe depression and severe boredom, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is packed with laughs, but never shies away from exploring big questions, and the last two books of the series take a slightly darker turn - and whilst they are less funny, they bring the series to a satisfying close.
This edition is beautifully designed, and the five books fit well into the edition, with print fairly small but still more than readable. The introductions are also well worth a read - author Nick Harkaway writes a lovely introduction about Adams and his writing, and Richard Dawkins writes an introduction that, for Dawkins, is surprisingly selfless and moving.
In short, if you love The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - this is a must buy.
And if you haven't read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy before - what are you waiting for?
This is the perfect edition for old and new readers alike, and I'm very grateful to William Heinemann for the copy.
For those who have enjoyed The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and are curious about the sixth book, written by Eoin Colfer after Adam's untimely death, a great review is up here: And Another Thing ... Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Part Six of Three (Hitchhikers Guide 6) by Eoin Colfer
For some more irreverent hilarity, Lamb by Christopher Moore is absolutely marvelous
