Molly originally moved to the seaside so that her parents could live with her Gran who was getting old and needing help. There's a secret between Molly and her Gran though: Gran used to be a secret mermaid and now Molly is too. During the day Molly is an ordinary schoolgirl, but at night with the help of her magical shell necklace she becomes a mermaid and returns to the deeps to help the other mermaids when there's a problem. This tim it's the penguins who have mysteriously disappeared from the icy seas and the mermaids are concerned that the Dark Queen might be behind the troubles.

If you have a child who is just mastering reading then one of the first authors to look to these days is [[:Category:Sue Mongredien|Sue Mongredien]]. In every book she delivers exactly what the emerging reader needs. Firstly and most importantly, it's always a good, exciting story and ''Penguin Peril'' is no exception. There's excitement, suspense and mystery – exactly what the young reader needs. They have to get the idea that reading is fun!

Chapters are short so that the young reader is never outfaced. A little effort will enable them to say that they've read a chapter and there are not too many chapters before they can be proud of having got a book under their belt. Illustrations mean that individual pages are not too full – and they can be quite helpful if some of the vocabulary has not been met before. Every Sue Mongredien book will be a little bit of a challenge because she never patronises her readers, but there's absolutely nothing which will be beyond them. After a little bit of help and reassurance from an adult on a first read it's the type of book which can be read several times.

The first book in the Secret Mermaid series was [[Enchanted Shell (The Secret Mermaid) by Sue Mongredien|Secret Shell]] but each book in the first and this series can be read on its own –although you may well end up buying more as each contains an excerpt from the next book in the series. There are worse books to be nagged into buying, but do be aware that these books will appeal to the collecting instincts of small girls!

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
