Bear has a big sign on his front door saying '''No Visitors Allowed'''. He's a grumpy old thing who just wants to be left alone. One day as he's making breakfast, a mouse comes to his door and sneaks inside his house. Bear keeps turning the mouse away, but the mouse keeps coming back and back and back.
I loved ''A Visitor For Bear''. There's something very amusing about the mouse continually turning up in the cupboard, fridge and kettle, not taking 'no' for an answer, and getting the bear crosser and crosser. The dynamic between the two works perfectly, and you can't help but laugh when Bear roars ''BEGONE!''. Seeing him stomp around his house, boarding up the windows and blocking up the chimney brings to mind all the great Tom and Jerry cartoons.
Kady MacDonald Denton's illustrations have a lovely traditional charm to them. The little mouse is as cheeky as can be, whilst Bear is lumbering and irate. As the two of them become friends, Bear's house looks like a delightful place to sit by the fire and have a nice cup of tea. The pictures support the text perfectly - adding to the atmosphere, without ever stealing focus from the story itself.
''A Visitor For Bear'' is slightly longer than the average picture book, which works really well. It's exciting and engaging enough to keep slightly older readers entertained, whilst clear and simple enough for the younger readers to keep up with it. Such is its quality that it's ideal for anyone old enough to have an interest in books, right through to those who are starting to learn to read for themselves. Highly recommended.
If tales of bears and grumpiness are your thing, then you'll love [[The Bear With Sticky Paws by Clara Vulliamy]]. Mouse fans won't go far wrong with [[Wendel's Workshop by Chris Riddell]].
