Robots are ace and this picture book about a little boy ‘bot Tin and his younger sister Nickel really does them justice.

When Tin agrees to look after Nickel for the afternoon, you can tell he really just wants her to play peacefully while he reads his comic. But little sisters have a habit of not doing what you want, and before he knows it, Tin is up off his sun lounger and racing after Nickel to keep her from danger. As he and Zinc the dog chase after her, they find themselves in an adventure of their own in the big city.

This is a lovely book that combines relatable, every day designs (families, houses, green grass, tall skyscrapers) with more futuristic elements such as flying cars. It’s super fun, with talking points on every page and although the story is well paced, the text appears in a leisurely fashion, just a sentence or two on each page, giving you lots of chance to pause and discuss. This is an excellent book that pays great attention to detail, so for example towards the end when Tin gives Nickel a balloon, the balloon stand is nestled in the background, so there’ll be none of those questions about how she got a balloon or where it came from.

The matte pages are lovely to touch, and the design is very pleasing on the eye, with a fun font, and so much colour on every page. The illustrations reminded me very much of classic Richard Scarry with a touch of Duplo in the zoo animals, and it means the living things can coexist perfectly with the more mechanical beings. If you’re the kind of person that allows pens near books (!), the front and back inside covers are begging to be coloured in, too.

I read a lot of picture books for this age group, but I really liked this one. It doesn’t have a gimmick to it, or even my faithful go-to rhyme, but it’s sweet, it’s exciting, it’s gender-neutral, it’s beautifully done, and it’s one caregivers won’t mind reading again and again as the story’s fun and not too long! Top marks.
