Harry the hog is just trying to get to sleep, when he hears a terrifying noise outside. It frightens him so much that he has to call his best friend Lil the shrew over to try and help him find out what the noise was. As the night goes on, they hear many a wild thing, but none of the noises are what Harry heard. Will they ever find out what it was? Will they ever get any sleep? You’ll just have to read and see for yourself!
This is a great book, immediately popular with both my son and me, it combines rhyme excellently with a good amount of plot. Instead of trying to shoehorn in rhyme and rhythm, it fits in nicely - working more as a background note to the story. There is some lovely imagery worked in (my particular favourite being ‘through the inbetween of day and night’) which I think shows off the skills of the author, poet Julia Copus. Her use of language and detail even in a children’s picture book is wonderful, especially when mixed with such a solid story.
It has very pleasing illustrations, calming hues and images which pair up well with the lyrical language and make it wonderful for a bedtime read. I love the odd teaming of a hog and a shrew, and this only serves to make it a more memorable and whimsical book which I think we’re going to be using at bedtime in our house for a long time to come.
This is the second in the Harry and Lil stories, and I’ve not read the first one yet, but I am pretty sure I’m going to go out and find myself a copy now that I’ve read this, because I found it such a pleasure to read.
Another great story with a similar theme is Tappity-Tap! What Was That? by Claire Freedman and Russell Julian, which I would recommend any day of the week if you enjoyed Harry and Lil's escapades.
