Finn may be only 9mm tall and still a teenager, but he's already saved the world once. Accidentally shrunk by his mad scientist Uncle Al, he joined a crack military team and helped foil the threat of a lethal bio-weapon, the Scarlatti wasp. But there's no let-up for Finn. Before Al can restore him to normal size, a new threat emerges.
Nasty big baddie Kaparis - boo, hiss - steals Al's machine and develops a dastardly plan. He intends to create an army of nano-bots that can self-replicate. He'll set them loose in the Shanghai factories that manufacture computers and release a hardware virus to spread throughout the world, eventually giving him control of the entire globe's technology and communications.
Well. Finn and comrades can't have that, now can they?
Hooray! Infinity Drake is back for a second outing! Firstly, the most important news. Grandma is also back! I loved Grandma and her knitting in [[Infinity Drake: The Sons of Scarlatti by John McNally|the first book]] and I love her just as much in the second. Sometimes, a secondary character in a book will become a reader's most beloved and I think this is the case for Grandma and me. She's funny and ditzy but also loyal and intelligent. Grandma rocks!
In other news, everything else is super-duper, too. The new adventure is a crazy rollercoaster of a ride but, like the first book, it's rooted in actual science and there are lots and lots of footnotes explaining various concepts. These could be off-putting in lesser hands, but such is the intensity and enthusiasm of the storytelling, they're not at all. For me, they were helpful on two levels - not only illuminating knowledge but also a successful brake on reading too fast, which I have a habit of doing when the story is exciting.
There's a slight cliffhanger ending but the main story arc is completed in a satisfying way so I wasn't frustrated. I would like to see the next book as soon as possible, however.
''Infinity Drake'' is such a fun series. It hurtles along with joyous abandon but it doesn't forget to be informative, too. And it has a host of relatable characters, a good sense of humour and an accessible style. If you like adventure stories, you'll love it.
