We're big fans of Richard Scarry in our house. Though I have to admit we don't usually read the story and we tend, instead, to just spend our pre-bedtime reading minutes scanning the pages for where the cheese car is, or who has stolen the bananas, or what Mr Frumble has crashed into now! This particular Scarry comes as a small disappointment, then, if that's what you're looking for as it focuses solely on the fire station and the activities of the firemen, but the story (if you bother to read it!) is actually quite good!
So, the day at the fire station mostly revolves around things getting very, very messy and everything needing a lot of cleaning. That sounds like my worst kind of work day, but the little piggy firemen don't seem too fussed. Generally, with toddlers, mess is good. Mess in stories is certainly a lot better than mess in my house, so I didn't mind reading this with my little boy. Most of the mess comes about because two raccoons have come to paint the fire station. Their names are Drippy and Sticky, which would surely put you off hiring them to do any kind of painting, but in they come, painting the ceiling pink, and of course getting paint all over one of the fire engines!
As well as the painting, and the mess, we do get to see the firemen in action, sorting out a traffic accident, and putting out a fire in a pizza oven. So although we don't have the range of vehicles that is usual in a Scarry book, we do have lots of fire engine action to look over and discuss. In great detail. There are hoses, and questions about why some of the firemen have real helmets and some of them seem to be wearing kitchen implements on their heads! The ending is quite delightful for small boys, since it involves a large crash between a wrecking ball and a enormous tanker full of jam!
There's lots of movement and action in the pictures, and we spent a lot of time wondering if any of the firemen was actually Mr Frumble. I didn't enjoy it as much as our other Scarry books, but it's an easy read on a rainy day, and would go down a treat with a small fire engine obsessive!
Our current favourite Scarry is [[Busiest People Ever by Richard Scarry|Busiest People Ever]] that you can quite easily spend hours looking at!
