|summary=This lovely picture book takes an affectionate and amusing look at family life and should appeal to both very young children and their parents.
}}
What are parents for? Perhaps young children think that all their parents do is nag them about what they should be doing such as remembering their manners, tidying up and eating all their vegetables. Well, it may be that parents do all this but they do so much more too. This lovely, gentle picture book describes the other very important roles that parents fulfil, covering everything from the slightly unusual ketchup targets and tent pole holders to the much loved storytellers and cuddle- givers.

Peter Bently takes an affectionate look at family life and many of the situations he describes in the amusing, rhyming text will be familiar to both parents and their children. The illustrations by Sara Ogilvie are cleverly observed and complement the text perfectly showing parents of different types. However several of the mums and dads wear that slightly harassed look combined with a quiet resignation with which many parents will quickly identify. This book would work extremely well shared together as there is so much detail to look at on every page and the humorous text will be satisfying to read aloud too. In my experience picture books with rhyming text work well with young children as sometimes they like to try and guess what is coming next in the story.

There is something very appealing about a picture book that can convey the love and kindness of a happy family life and I think that this book does just that. It shows parents sorting out messes and muddles, apologising for their children’s mistakes and generally making things better when needed. This is a reassuring message for children to hear and in this particular book is told with humour too

Peter Bently has written several funny picture books and if you would like to try another of his books Bookbag recommends [[The Great Sheep Shenanigans by Peter Bently and Mei Matsuoka|The Great Sheep Shenanigans]]
