One day, Noah opens the fridge and finds that there is a mammoth inside! His dad tells him not to be silly, but when he and mum open the fridge to check there, indeed, is a very large mammoth, squashed up inside! Whatever will they do to get him out?
This is one of those wonderful children's picture books that made me laugh out loud when I read it. Firstly, the poor squashed up mammoth is very funny, and then begins the rescue mission. The family call the fire brigade to come and get the mammoth out, but as they attempt to catch him in a net he makes a run for it and escapes. They chase him through the town but then he climbs a tree! Since they can't get him down from the tree they initially decide to sit and wait until he comes down, but after some time it seems like he's pretty determined to stay up in the tree! In the end they give up, leaving the family to sit with the mammoth until they, too, give up and head back home.
So is the poor mammoth to be stuck in the tree forever? I'm afraid I'm not going to reveal the ending, because that's the bit that's really funny and such a wonderful surprise that it would spoil the book if I told you any more. You will just have to take my word for it, that it is most definitely worth reading!
The story is very simply written, easy to follow for little toddlers and yet interesting enough for older children (and their parents)! The artwork is well done, especially the mammoth who I found quite endearing. As mentioned, I like the picture of him inside the fridge, but I also love his expressions when he's stuck up in the tree. The drawings are very simple, and quite a few of them at the end take place during the night so with dark colours, but even so they draw you into the story until you reach the final, clever conclusion.
I wouldn't have expected to be so enamoured with a mammoth, but I certainly recommend this short, funny story ideal for children and grown ups too.
