|title=The Outline of Love
|rating=3.5
|genre=General Fiction
|summary=Persephone Triebold has spent most of her life on the Assynt Peninsula in north-west Scotland. It's isolated, rugged and under-populated. Her father opted to live there after the death of his wife, feeling that it was safe for his young daughter. She's been home-schooled and has had very little contact with other people - but makes the decision that she's going to university in London. Once there she shares a house with three other girls and develops a crush on former indie musician and Booker-winning novelist Leo Ford. She works her way into his circle of friends - and finally into his bed - but never feels that has ''connected'' with him. Part of it is that she can't get past ''that'' incident in his past which involved his sister, Ivy, her partner, a gun and a sword - and no one will talk about it.

|title=Another Way to Fall
|summary=Did you listen at doors when you were little? Did you hang from the banisters, trying to hear what was going on in the grown up world when you'd been banished to your room? In this story, eleven year old Michael finds out most of his information by listening. He's adept at creeping around and learning snippets of information, local gossip and tidbits of family dynamics. But one night, when his mum comes home screaming and covered in blood the secrets that Michael becomes privvy too are far more disturbing than what Tricia down the road has been getting up to.

|title=Turning Forty
|rating=5
|genre=General Fiction
|summary=I made the mistake of reading Mike Gayle's ''Turning Thirty'' in the weeks before I did so. Despite it being a story of a man whose life fell apart just before his 30th birthday, he still seemed to be doing better than I was, which made it a readable but depressing experience. Fortunately, ''Turning Forty'' is being published about 15 months before I reach that milestone and my life is in a different place which, hopefully, will combine to make it a more enjoyable read.
