It's amazing what you can do with a Grandpa - some you might well have thought about already, such as cash machine, taxi, dance partner and dictionary, but you might never have thought of using him as a basketball hoop, tailor or butler, but perhaps the most important of all forty in the book is ''friend''. It's a delightful celebration of all that's wonderful about being a grandparent - and a grandchild.

The pictures are gentle on the eye, although I've got to confess that 'Grandpa' doesn't entirely conform to the modern vision of the office holder, with his grey hair, balding pate and, er, dreadful dress sense! The modern version is more likely to be a wage earner who ''wishes'' that he had the time to spend with the kids. I'm nit-picking though and it's only fair to add that there will be an equal number of men who wish that their backs allowed them to swing a child around like that.

Having said that Grandpa might not be the latest version, he's no slouch where modern technology is concerned as he makes a great email friend. I've read through the book two or three times now and I was conscious of a real feeling of ''envy''. The relationship between the two generations is so special and it shines from these pages. I think it will probably appeal to Grandpa more than the grandchild: Grandpa will ''know'' how special such a relationship is. The grandchild knows only that Grandpa is always there for him.

On the UK side of the pond some of the language will seem a little ''American''. A ''play date'' is not yet a common occurrence and a ''veterinarian'' is more usually a vet but it doesn't really matter. It's the fun that shines through. I'd like to thank the publishers for dropping a copy into the Bookbag.

If this book appeals then you might also enjoy [[Elephant by Petr Horacek]].
