Chico wants to go fishing with his father very much, and begs him, but dad says no, he will make too much noise and scare away the fish. In the end, Chico sets out to go fishing on his own, and he does really well. This is a very simple story. It is accompanied though by fascinating, detailed illustrations. In fact, it is billed as a Korky Paul picture book, one in which illustrator Korky Paul has done the drawings. I think this is really interesting as often illustrated children’s books are sold on the basis of the author of the text.

Chico lives in a dramatic landscape of rocks, trees and water. All sorts of creatures appear in the pictures, not just the fish, so it is a lovely book to pore over and see what new details you can find out.

The text is longer than in the average picture book, suggesting it is targeted at children in their first few years at primary school who like to be read to and perhaps are beginning to read themselves. However, the book also appealed to my 2 year old to hold and look at, perhaps because of the colourful pictures. He loves to hold books and remember words that have been read out to him, and also to look at the pictures and work out what is happening in his own words.

I suspect we will be reading this book to the boys regularly for a while. Recommended.

Thank you very much to Oxford University Press for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
