Who scored the most goals in the Greek Mythology League? The centaur forward. Badoom boom tshhhh. It's a football joke book, packed to the gills with all sorts of cheesiness and silliness. Funniest ever? Perhaps not, but it's not too bad.

A joke book boils down to one thing: how funny it is. There were a few giggles, a few groans, and not too many stony-faced silences. There weren't any deep belly laughs, but I'm rather long in the tooth and had heard many of them before. Its young audience, spending their pocket money on a little light-hearted reading, will find much to amuse them. Toss in a few references to players they know (Kangarooney, Michael Owing, Roberto Car-loss) and it all works well.

No joke book is 100% perfect. Not everyone's sense of humour is entirely in line with everyone else's. Joke books need to have a nice mix of jokes, and leave you with a feeling that overall there was more funny than unfunny. ''The Funniest Football Joke Book Ever'' does that. It's also got a few light-hearted cartoons woven into the mix, courtesy of Nigel Baines.

Its narrow topic makes it ideal for young football fans eagerly counting down the seconds to the World Cup. It might not be as long as bumper joke books, but it doesn't feel lacking. It's not a must-have, but it's jolly enough. Worth checking out.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

[[Winnie's Jokes by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul]] is a similar joke book, although I preferred ''The Funniest Football Joke Book Ever''. [[The World At Our Feet by Paul Cookson]] is a collection of surprisingly good football poems, which had me laughing out loud in places.
