Every small child should have book (or a few) containing traditional nursery rhymes, and every so often newly illustrated collections are published.

''Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'' is part of such a new series called ''Time for a Rhyme'', published by Harper Collins and illustrated by Mandy Stanley known for her [[The Fairy Ball (Lettice) by Mandy Stanley|Lettice]] stories and other picture books.

''Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'' contains bedtime rhymes and lullabies, the title Twinkle, Twinkle, Rock-a-bye Baby, Wee Willie Winkie and several more well known and well loved ones. It's a good selection, with ten rhymes altogether, each set on a colourful double-spread of pages.

The illustrations are modern in form, resembling paper-cut-outs and a lot of entertaining detail that captures the attention of children (''Why is there a mouse in his shoe, Mummy?'').

The overall manner is, however, very pretty and almost insufferably cute, featuring a lot of smiley faces, smiley animals, smiley moons and twinkling stars galore: in combination with the rather saccharine character of some rhymes as they are, it might be too much for some adults. Have a look at the cover and decide whether it's your thing or not before buying, but it does work well for the listening children, providing just about enough interest for the time it takes to read the rhyme.

I liked the fact (undoubtedly commercially lucrative too) that the collection is divided into several parts: with a longer book one always risks having to read to the very end, while the ''Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'' offers a perfect selection for that final bedtime read.

Recommended, if you like the style of illustrations.

Thanks to the publishers for sending this book to the Bookbag.

If you're looking for a colection of nursery rhymes then we can particularly recommend [[Favourite Nursery Rhymes by Brian Wildsmith]]. On the other hand, have a look at [[The Selfish Crocodile Book of Nursery Rhymes by Faustin Charles and Michael Terry]] for a reworking of the traditional rhymes.
