Mr Nicholas Noo is the host of the magical Hotel of Hoo and he's just welcoming his very first guests. They're going to be in room number one and it looks very comfortable with a cosy fire and comfortable bed. But Mr Noo is a considerate host and he shows his guests around the hotel. There's only one rule: don't ever look behind door 32. Now, you're going to wonder about what, ''exactly'' is in room 32, because we'll see some exciting and wonderful things as you move from room 2 to room 31. Forget expensive theme parks: you'd be much better off going to the Hotel of Hoo.
The book is written in verse. Let's look at rooms two and three for examples.
''Through door number two are the grumpy old clowns.''<br>
''I don't think they're funny, but they help clean the grounds.''
''Through door number 3 are the fidgety knight.''<br>
''They itch and they scratch, but they fix all the lights.''
OK, so you think that clowns (in full costume) and knights (in armour) are a bit, well, ordinary? Hold on to your hat, because we're now going to meet zombies who dance (and do mending), purple goblins, grey-haired villains, a mysterious box, unusual pets, miniature giants, vampire mermaids, a bathroom of gold (beware the cold seat), tea-loving monsters, scary ghosts who do the cooking, cute little elves, wingless dragons, evil fairies, big-headed monkeys, baby wizards and very old trolls. Convinced? I thought you might be.
The words are from [[:Category:B C R Fegab|B C R Fegan]] with illustrations by [[:Category:Lenny Wen|Lenny Wen]]. We've encountered this wonderful combination [[Henry and the Hidden Treasure by B C R Fegan and Lenny Wen|before]] and all the magic is still there. Wen's illustrations are big, bright and bold, but most importantly, they ''add'' to the words and you'll spot something new every time you read the book.
Most children's picture book teach them valuable lessons and sometimes I wonder why authors feel that this is so essential. ''Don't Ever Look Behind Door 32'' is different. It's not going to encourage your child to share his toys, be polite or eat his greens: it's just glorious, silly fun, because having fun is a good thing too, you know? And these are the sort of books which children return to again and again for that very reason. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
Were you about to mention that I still haven't told you what's in room 32? Well, I'm not going to: you'll have to read the book to find out. All I'll say is that it isn't in the least scary, is very true and you'll laugh.
