Worzel would like you to stand still and let him come to you. He'll want to sniff you once or twice and he'd really prefer that you didn't try to stroke him straight away. Please don't wave your arms about, squeal or yell or shout or Worzel will end up as a quivering heap on the floor. He'd like to check that you're kind and safe and after he's walked around you (whilst you pretend that he's not there) he might let you stroke him (gentle strokes on the flank please - and ''not'' on the head) and when his tail begins to wag and he does a little dance it means that you've made a friend.
He'll give you a lick or a nudge when he'd like a stroke. He ''might'' even take a treat from you. And this is what Wurzel Worzel would like you to do each time you meet. You might just be one of the people Worzel is not scared of.
Oh but this book is gorgeous. I fell for Worzel Woolface as soon as I saw him and I had murderous intentions towards that giant of a man who thought that it was alright to threaten a small puppy with a newspaper and shout at him. When you meet a dog you don't know what sort of a life he's had, so this approach will work with all dogs. Some will come dashing up to you, happy and confident and wanting to play. At the other end of the scale there will be those dogs like our beloved [[Kia]] who in nearly fourteen years only let a few very special people into her life. Respect the dog's wishes and you may well make a friend for life.
