The Darker Shade of Magic trilogy concludes by continuing with the story of Lila Bard, finding her way through the different Londons, one with magic, one without magic, a London where magic has near enough destroyed their world and the last London, which balances precariously on the edge of oblivion. Her friend, Kell and the pressures and demands of being the Prince's protector and Captain Alucard Emery and his ascent back into the aristocracy.
You'll have to forgive me, I have to try to write this without giving much away as I want each and every one of you to read the entire series from beginning to end, as it's just that good. Lila, a street urchin is plucked from obscurity in the previous books and finds her way into a world with magic. The conclusion from this book finishes off her awakening and discovery of the world. Do not be deceived by her long blonde locks and girlish charms, she is not to be trifled with, by any stretch of the imagination. Kell, who has been believed to be the last Antari, those with a certain type of magic, protector to the heir of HIS London, has to stop an almost demonic force from overtaking everything he has learnt to love. V E Schwab describes Kell beautifully, as someone who has no time for revelry and the capitalism of his world, but has adapted to it, for the love of his King and for the love of someone else. Romance is slowly woven throughout all of the trilogy but not in a hearts-and-flowers kind of way. More a blood-and-passion love; if they have to die, they'd die for each other. Beautiful but sinister at the same time.
