What if the cow who jumped over the Moon got fed up with jumping over the moon? I mean, wouldn't you? Jumping, jumping, jumping, every single day? And jumping over exactly the same thing, too. Especially if there was a really interesting-looking blue and green planet directly below you. You'd want to investigate some new entertainment, wouldn't you?
Well, Jooks and Anna have given the cow who jumped over the Moon exactly what it has been wanting. In this lovely little picture book, the cow heads on down to the Earth to find something different to jump over. He tries jumping over various earthbound things - Antarctica, for example - but the jumping doesn't work out quite how he intended. There are some, ahem, colourful accidents. So the cow heads back to his ''moon-cheese house on the Moon'' to get himself cleaned up. And after his moon-cheese shower, he looks into his moon-cheese mirror and sees...
... what the cow sees, you will have to buy the book to find out! But it's safe to say that it's a happy discovery.
I thought ''The Cow Who Jumped Over the Moon'' was a delightful little picture book. The premise is great - it takes a staple character from a nursery rhyme and asks a question that generations of children will have thought entirely sensible to ask. Doesn't that cow get bored jumping over that Moon every night? The book runs with possible answers to that question in a slightly wild, slightly surreal but always humorous way. And it will take its readers - parent and child alike - along with it.
The text is short and sweet, using an accessible vocabulary and some playful language. It has a good rhythm and scans well, making it both easy and a pleasure to read. This is certainly something parents will appreciate. The illustrations are gorgeous, each filling a double page spread with great energy and good use of colour. The cow's expression goes from boredom to confusion and even panic, then to relief and finally to joy. And the Moon looks very cheesy indeed, exactly as it should.
