'Nora, the girl who ate and ate and ate...' is a fabulously funny book. Before you even open it, you can tell that Nora is a small child with a huge appetite as on the front cover her plate is piled high with all manner of food that she appears extremely eager to devour. Throughout the story, Nora eats more and more but when she scoffs all of the 'hugest gooey chocolate cake' that her mother has just made, she is sent to her room. It doesn't stop there though as Nora hunts round for more things to eat and I am not just talking about food. She eats everything including her teddy bear curled up in her mattress in order to make a sandwich! After finally eating her clothes she lets out an almighty burp that has the most surprising but happy consequence for this hungry heroine! She whizzes into Space like a balloon and ends up on the moon which, of course, as we all know, is made of cheese!

I shared this book with my two daughters aged six and eight and they absolutely loved it. Nora is such a funny character and when they saw everything that she was eating they could not believe it. They particularly laughed at the enormous burp (what child wouldn't?) and what happened afterwards. It is all made even funnier by the fabulous illustrations that accompany the story and show all the things that Nora is eating with relish. Nora herself has big bulging eyes and a mischievous grin but luckily she never seems to get any bigger.

The story is written in rhyme which also seems to add to the humour. There are some wonderful descriptions, such as:

Her socks and shoes, she didn't care,
She gobbled every single pair.
And when she finished off her shirt,
She ate her jumper for dessert.

The great thing about rhyme as well is that very small children can supply the rhyming words and also eagerly anticipate what is coming next. The lines that follow the ones above are:

They all went down in one huge SLURP!
Then Nora did a great big...

At this point you have to turn the page to read the final word of that line and my daughters gleefully supplied it before we got that far. I hope these examples show how much fun this wonderful book is.

This is such a bright and colourful book with attractive font and appealing illustrations which I am sure that most children will really enjoy and keep coming back for more.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

As this book's illustrations are so wonderful, you might want to take a look at Aliens In Underpants Save the World or The Shark in the Dark. Both of these are also illustrated by Ben Cort.
