Bob is neat. He lives in a neat and tidy house with Rex his friendly and really quite neat dog. All is well in their neat and happy world except for one thing. Bob needs a job. He decides to be a pet-sitter and is looking forward to looking after cute little hamsters and bunnies. What actually arrives is unfortunately something quite different and poor Bob is quite unprepared for the chaos that ensues when his pets misbehave.

From the arrival of Goldilocks complete with Baby Bear this charming story cleverly utilises the most well-known of our fairy tales in a book that encourages the reader, or listener, to spot the different characters. From the moment a rather grumpy Baby Bear is left with Bob there are a multitude of characters who add to the commotion including the golden goose, the three billy goats gruff and the three little pigs. This works brilliantly as a read-aloud for the younger listener. I read this to different groups of children aged 4 to 7 and they all enjoyed it and became involved in the story by asking questions and pointing out things they thought I may have missed.

The illustrations by Jorge Martin are vibrant and child friendly. As is often the case with good picture books the children that I shared this with loved the fact that they were able to predict what was going to happen through the illustrations. For children this feeling of being in on the plot does greatly add to the appeal of books such as this. Judging by the happy reaction of my own audience I think this book is destined to be popular with young children. Of course for maximum enjoyment they do need to be familiar with the traditional tales the characters originally appeared in.

Thank you to the publishers, Little Tiger Press for providing this review copy.

Another picture book offering an alternative take on a traditional tale that I particularly like is How the Library (Not the Prince) Saved Rapunzel by Wendy Meddour and Rebecca Ashdown
