When Sally wakes up in a taxi in the middle of the night, miles from home, dazed, confused and dressed only in her nightie, she is terrified. And so are her friends and family. After the emergency services conclude she's not an immediate danger to herself (despite being found stumbling precariously close to a cliff edge) she's shipped off home where her husband, parents and mother in law rally round to help her care for herself and their two young children. Sally has a battle on her hands, though, as everyone is walking on eggshells, determined not to upset her and yet also unable or unwilling to believe her version of events that night.

I have read very few books recently about women embracing motherhood, and this is just the latest on a long list of reasons not to have children. If the tiredness doesn't kill you, the postnatal depression, relationship strains or general purposelessness might just finish you off. Sally has a baby and a pre-schooler, a husband who works at home, and family who are hands on, but she just can't cope. With Theo not sleeping for more than mere minutes at a time, she's running on empty and as everyone knows, lack of sleep can do strange things to your mind. Can she really believe what she thinks to be true, when everyone around her is telling her otherwise?

This is a thriller that's composed in an intricate way yet is so easy to read and lose yourself in. Much like Sally, you are told one thing but have to question it. Can things me that simple, or is there another side to the story? Who can be trusted? And, is anyone in danger if the truth emerges? I found it incredibly engaging and was desperate to solve the puzzle. There are numerous twists of fate, so even if you have a glimmer of an idea, you won't possibly guess the full story, and the ending left me speechless, and ready to thump a certain character for the lies that had been told.

I would highly recommend this story. It's a brilliant winter read that you can easily do in a weekend or a long lazy day on the sofa, and it left my brain buzzing for hours afterwards.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us a copy to review and add that You Sent Me A Letter from the same author is also excellent.
