This is a gem of a book. Fred just can't get to grips with his underwear; pants and vests alike, it's taking him most of the day to get dressed and it's going to take much more than his sister's endless advice to help. Caryl Hart and Leigh Hodgkinson have made a great job of turning what is just a nice premise into a brilliant book. Though some might suggest that pants have been overdone in the world of picture books, I think I could find a few thousand five year olds who would disagree.

While the images may feel slightly derivative of Lauren Child, I think this simply goes to show why it is such a popular style. It's a kind of drawing which children can easily relate to, yet it still manages to carry in it a good deal of skill. There are a lot of lovely details in the images that will mean you'll find new things to look at on each read, and also means that storytime can be as long or as short as you like. The layout of the images is also nice; interesting and interactive without being confusing, while the actual story carries through nicely in conjunction with what is going on in the page. The rhyming works very well to bring the story a new level of entertainment, with some genuinely laugh out loud moments scattered throughout the book.

While it can be difficult to decide whether or not to go out and buy a book these days, I would say this particular one will make a wonderful present, or just a nice treat for you and the kids. Its presentation is lovely, the size is good and this particular hard back edition screams quality. Your children will be crying out to see what mischief Fred will get up to next; I know I am!

Overall I would buy this book, put it on my son's bookcase and look forward to each and every time we read it together in the future, because I'm sure there will be many!

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

Reading Suggestions : If you enjoy reading about pants, you could try Aliens In Underpants Save The World by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort. Or if it's a silly adventure you're looking for, why not have a look at The Kiss That Missed by David Melling?
