Having had just a short amount of time to adjust to her new position as the head of one of history's most powerful supernatural families, Holly finds herself in a constant battle with arch-enemy Michael Deveraux, while trying to come to terms with her feelings for his son, the dark and brooding, Jer. As she finds herself more responsible for her growing coven, who look to her for protection, her cousins begin to wonder whether Holly's increasing power is more dangerous than they previously thought.
What can I say about this series of books that would do it justice? It has everything a fantasy tale should have: magic; witches; warlocks; demons; century-old family secrets; spirits of ancestors; supernatural wars; spells; and love. Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié have teamed up again to continue their epic tale of love and deceit between two families and the affect it has on all who come across it.
Wicked 2 is the second double volume edition now available, featuring Legacy and Spellbound, the third and fourth books of this captivating series. After reading these two books in one go, you'll wonder how readers of the single books ever managed to contain themselves! – After all, Holder and Viguié are proving themselves to be masters of the cliffhanger ending. Wicked 2 gives you the opportunity to carry on the story without any waiting.
Holder and Viguié's writing is on top form as always, giving readers exactly what they want. In Legacy, we see Holly and her coven joined by a whole host of new characters, each with their own backstory, and we also begin to really feel how dangerous this magical world is as the tone of the book gets more and more dark with every page. Holly is still haunted by her ancestress, Isabeau; Amanda, discovers that the love of her life has been right under her nose all along; and Nicole finds herself torn between the two families as a forced marriage holds her prisoner.
It is Spellbound, however, that is in a league of its own. The story takes a different turn as the House of Cahors is torn apart and people begin to show their true colours. Not only is the coven's stability in jeopardy but cracks are also beginning to show in the House of Deveraux too as the story takes a number of unexpected twists and turns that'll make this the book you won't be able to put down.
This is the book that gives each character a chance to take centre stage with multiple narrations all the way through and shocking revelations and secrets that have been kept close to their hearts for years. Evil is a prominent theme in this book, and that's what makes it different from usual teen fantasy. By the time you're only half-way through you won't know who to side with.
The unexpected change in our main characters is what makes this gripping reading that you don't want to miss out on. Unlike many bland and one-dimensional characters that scatter the pages of a lot of fantasy books, these are characters that you believe in and can relate to. None are perfect, and all are capable of being swayed away from their usual instincts every once in a while.
Anyone who's picked up a fantasy book will love this. There are so many elements to the series that make it a fascinating read that it's hard to see how anyone couldn't enjoy it. While Legacy's pace might seem slow at times, Spellbound's action-filled pages more than makes up for it.
If you're new to the story, a review of the first double edition of this series, Wicked is also available on The Bookbag too. Other readers looking for another great fantasy series to latch onto might want to try City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.
Thank you very much to the publishers for sending this book to The Bookbag. This is a terrific series that I've never been able to put down from book one.
