Eilidh Lawson thought that life was finally looking up. She'd struggled through years of failed fertility treatments despite knowing that her husband was seeing someone else. Their marriage had crumbled around their feet – but then Eilidh found that she was pregnant. Despite being only ten weeks into the pregnancy she wore a maternity smock – and that was the day she lost the baby. Months of heartbreak, depression and hospitalisation followed until one day she decided that enough was enough. She was leaving her home, her marriage and most of her possessions and she was returning to her childhood home in the Highlands of Scotland. She was never going to risk that sort of hurt again.

Back in Glen Avich there's someone with similar heartbreak on his hands. Jamie McAnena had a fling with an artist holidaying in the Highlands and the result was Maisie. Jamie was besotted with Maisie's mother and even more so with Maisie herself, but Janet had never wanted to be a mother and had no feelings for Jamie or Maisie. One day she upped and left – taking her cat but leaving her daughter. Jamie was determined that he would never be hurt again and after his mother died he settled into being a family of two.

But sometimes you have to learn to let go, move on and take risks again, but life in Glen Avich is like being in a fishbowl. Everyone knows your business and not everyone is one your side. It's one of those occasions when a little help is needed – and this time it comes from beyond the grave. Now, I'm not normally all that keen on the paranormal in stories (sorry – I'll be honest – I really dislike it!) but here it's handled with sensitivity and ''wit'' and it lifted the story from the ordinary. Add to this some characters you can really go out and bat for and you have a great holiday read. Eilidh is warm-hearted and into her thirties, but her family still have the power to hurt her on a regular basis. It's Maisie who steals the book though. You'll want to eat her with a spoon.

There were occasions when I wanted to tell Eilidh and Jamie to ''get on with it'', or when all legions of Scottish relatives confused me, but putting that aside it was a thoroughly enjoyable book which I was really sorry to finish.
