If your children like silly things, they will definitely enjoy the story of The Three Sillies, written and illustrated by Tony Ross, who is perhaps best known for his wonderful [[I Want a Sister (Little Princess) by Tony Ross|Little Princess]] stories. The story of The Three Sillies is indeed very silly and you can tell that it is going to be just that by looking at the front cover and seeing three very strange people standing on their heads looking, unsurprisingly, very red faced.

Not all the characters in this story are silly though. George is both handsome and sensible but falls in love with Sukie, who is very silly. When she introduces George to her silly mum and dad, he is amazed by all of the silly things that they do such as having fish jelly and dead fly cake for tea and collecting beer in a paper bag. George decides that he would really like to marry Sukie but he is worried that things might just get a bit too silly for him. He resolves that if he can find people who are sillier than Sukie and her family he will come back and marry her. This leads him to travel far and wide and, believe it or not, he actually comes across people who are far sillier. This leads him to the conclusion that Sukie is perhaps not quite so silly after all and that by marrying her he might help her become more sensible – or is that a step too far?

You could say that this is a very silly book but it is for exactly that reason that children will love it. It is very funny with lots of daft things happening. Both my daughters really laughed at all the silly things like the old lady trying to get her cow on the roof and the villagers attempting to scoop the moon out of the pond.

The book is very attractive and the language used is accessible for young children. It's a great book for reading aloud especially as there are lots of words in big bold capital letters for you to emphasise. It has some fabulous illustrations too which really help to tell the story and it is a delight to pick out the silly details in each one. Tony Ross always seems to enjoy giving his characters big bulging eyes and this is the case in this book. I can't say that it makes them very attractive but they do have a certain unusual appeal.
