Kipper's blanket stinks, his ball is chewed and his bone is soggy. He's in the mood for some tidying up, so he tosses them and gets everything spick and span. Sans blanket, his basket is suddenly very uncomfortable, so he looks around to see how animals get comfy. You know Kipper, right? You've read the books and seen the TV series narrated by Martin Clunes. You'd like a dog, like a dog, like a dog like Kipper. Now we're treated to a 21 year anniversary edition of the original book, complete with a 10 episode DVD.

Whilst you're suddenly feeling incredibly old that 1990 was 21 years ago, I'll tell you that ''Kipper'' is as great as everyone remembers and knows. He's a sweet character, with an inquisitive mind, a sense of playful adventure, and doesn't mind making a fool of himself if he gets things a bit wrong. You'll love him for many reasons, but I particularly adore his attempt to make a nest, which just amounts to three sticks. The ''that's not my...'' plot is well-trodden ground in picture books, but it works particularly well here.

Mick Inkpen's illustrations are, of course, as gorgeous as ever. They have warmth, charm and familiarity. Through his immense popularity, Kipper has become much more than just a few pictures in a book - he's as real as characters can be to children and adults. However, even if you try to strip all that away, there's a huge amount to admire in the pictures. There are wonderful little touches throughout, such as seeing Kipper's much-loved toy rabbit mirroring Kipper's sad face as he tries to get comfy in his blanketless basket.

And then there's a 10 episode DVD on top of things. The TV series is a fine accompaniment to this and [[Kipper's A To Z by Mick Inkpen|other]] [[One Year With Kipper by Mick Inkpen|Kipper books]]. It captures the gentle pace of the books, whilst Martin Clunes' expressive narration imbues it with even more heart. And you'll sing along to the great music every time. The Kipper books are classics, and rightly so. Highly recommended.
