After graduating with a degree in chemistry from Magdalen College, Oxford, Dr Pritchard read medicine at Queen’s University, Belfast. Following junior hospital jobs in Belfast he moved to Wales, spending 30 years as a Consultant Rheumatologist and honorary Senior Lecturer at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The facilities at the hospital enabled him to combine clinical and teaching work with research interests and he has published 40 papers in international peer reviewed journals on a wide range of topics.

Rheumatology is a very broad subject and in the last few years he has developed a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of work related rheumatic disorders, including Writer’s Cramp in its various guises, both past and present. He is also interested in the history of medicine and this book combines these two interests to their mutual benefit. He has now retired and lives with his wife near Malvern. Outside medicine he enjoys a number of occupations including the restoration of old buildings, currently the grade 2 listed Great Malvern station.
