Anna and her father have just moved to the coastal town of Winter - they needed to downsize. So Anna finds herself at a new school trying to make new friends. So when she finds a book of spells and Prue, Liz and June suggest trying the one which will enchant a boy to love you, Anna goes along with it - despite not believing in magic - and thinks of the gorgeous Seth Waters when she closes her eyes. And it's the worst thing she could have done...

... because Anna is a witch. By unknowingly enchanting Seth, she has set in motion a dangerous chain of events - she's in love with a boy whose love for her can't be trusted, and she has alerted the attention of a power-hungry coven who will stop at nothing to control her. Anna's life is about to get very complicated indeed.

''A Witch in Winter'' is the first in a planned trilogy and I can see it going down very well with fans of the paranormal genre. Anna herself is a familiar character with whom readers will immediately identify. She begins the book feeling like a fish out of water as she begins life at a new school and so she is immediately sympathetic. Seth, the romantic interest, is absolutely gorgeous and the boyfriend we all dream of having. The magic in the book is shown largely by control of the elements, so there are lots of violent storms and gales which also act as a metaphor for the strong, uncontrollable emotions of adolescence. I loved the descriptions of landscape and weather, which are intense, energetic and dangerously romantic.

There is a great deal to like here, even for a grizzled old bag like me, who is irritated by a heroine who initially puts more stock in disenchanting a boy she fancies than in saving an entire town from catastrophe. But then, I'm not an adolescent, haven't been for years, and Anna steps up to the plate eventually. As we knew she would.

Recommended for all fans of witchery.

Fans of paranormal romance will also enjoy [[Witches War: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer]] and [[Strange Angels by Lili St Crow]]. Those who like to see the sisters doing it a bit more for themselves will love [[Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce]] - as the human girls give the nasty werewolves a good kicking.
