Achilles the crocodile is growing big and strong from eating bananas. He's awfully proud of his beautiful teeth. There's just one little problem: Achilles really wants to eat a child.
I was hooked from the second I saw the title. I love books with a wicked glint in their eye - be it the [[:Category:Roald Dahl|master of wicked glints]] or [[Don't Read This Book! by Jill Lewis and Deborah Allwright|books that demand you don't read them]]. ''I Really Want To Eat A Child'' more than lives up to its promise. There's nothing scary here for any child, but it's a deliciously naughty idea to have a hungry crocodile as the hero. And make sure you camp it up whenever Achilles repeats the book's title. This is a book to turn into a real comedy event!
I loved every single word, every single page. I love Achilles' big-headedness and sulkiness. I love his arrogance and getting his come-uppance. I love his daring plans. He's a scamp and a trier, and you'd be in fits of laughter if he was your little pal. Such a beautifully well-crafted character. And that haughty stomp! Oh, such fun. Such such such fun.
Dorothée de Monfreid's illustrations meld perfectly with the text. Both create a glorious world that you'll wish you were a part of (even if that means you run the risk of Achilles nipping at your toes). ''I Really Want To Eat A Child'' was originally published as ''Je Mangerais Bien Un Enfant''. You wouldn't know it wasn't originally written in English, so kudos to the translator.
Highly highly recommended. Buy it, read it, and love Achilles the crocodile as much as I do.
