It's cold and Mousse brings his favourite toy, Muddy Bear, out to play in the snow. Mousse builds a snowdog, then calls on fellow doggy pal Nut to come and play. When it's time to go home, Muddy Bear's nowhere to be seen. Maybe Big Bear has taken him back to his cave in Wild Wood...

''I Love You, Muddy Bear'' is a sweet lost and found tale. How Muddy Bear goes missing isn't telegraphed, but the clues are there for the eagle-eyed reader. Trusting the reader (no matter how young) is always a good thing, and it pays off here. It provides a depth and re-readability that many picture books don't always achieve, whilst not being confusing or leaving anyone behind.

Jane Simmons' illustrations are lovely. Although the styles are slightly different, I was reminded of the warm characters in [[Bear Feels Scared by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman]]. Mousse and Nut are gorgeous characters. You'll want to romp in the snow with them, and your heart goes out to Mousse when he realises his beloved toy has gone missing.

For children looking for a slightly longer story than the average picture book, ''I Love You, Muddy Bear'' is an excellent choice. It makes for perfect bedtime reading. Recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

[[Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough]] is an excellent doggy book for young readers. For a lost and found tale with a twist, check out [[Colin and the Wrong Shadow by Leigh Hodgkinson]].
