The problem with a craft which is largely based on traditional designs is that what results from your labours is also traditional, or - depending upon what light you shine on it - old-fashioned. Vivika DeNegre has curated a collection of patterns from today's top designers. As a word of warning, if you read Modern Patchwork Magazine you may well find that there's nothing new in the book, but if you're new to the magazine this could well prove to be a delightful collection from the back catalogue.
You get project instructions for more than twenty quilting projects: whether or not you consider them to be modern will be up to you. Personally I find table runners to be old-fashioned but it may well be that they're so old-fashioned that they're now in vogue. Quilts and cushions are timeless and unusual tote bags are very on message with the current move to eliminating plastic bags. There's even a yoga mat. The wall hangings show elegant use of colour (but this is constant throughout the book) and it did strike me that some would also make beautiful lap quilts. I did like the complete lack of twee little projects which many books seem to resort to make up the numbers.
There are quite a few time-saving techniques included, along with tutorials to take you through each project step by step. Whilst not ideally suited to the complete beginner, just a little experience will mean that you can make the most of this book. I've been patchworking for half a century and quilting for decades, but I still found a great deal in the book which added to my knowledge. Quite a few of the projects use curves which I know frighten many patchworkers, but the instructions included are clear and work well.
On the Amazon page you'll find a 'look inside' feature and this will give you some excellent examples of the projects available. I'd like to thank the publishers for allowing me to see a proof of the book.
If this book appeals then we think that you might also enjoy Stash-Busting Quilts by Lynne Edwards or Couture Prairie And Flea Market Treasures by Rachel Ashwell.
