Monkey and Bird aren’t tired. They don’t want to sleep. They want an adventure! And so leaving the birds sleeping in the trees, they set off to the moon.

This is a sweet book but may not be one for bedtime. At one point the alien creature who lives on the moon says

I can see that you are NOT in bed. Never mind, FOLLOW ME! There are lots and lots of things to see

So - no being told off for not being asleep and instead encouragement to come and play instead. Of course they do fall asleep at the end, but not before having a good play. And not a very sedate one, either: they run around building sandcastles in the moon dust and race about on moon buggies. What fun.

I couldn’t quite figure out the illustrations. I knew what was going on, I mean I couldn’t quite figure out whether I liked them or not. They’re a bit kooky and sometimes quite sharp around the edges, not your typical children's book for pre-schoolers at all, but I warmed to them, especially to Monkey, as the pages passed.

This book is inspired by the well known children’s song of the same name though the similarities aren’t massive beyond the countdown back to 3,2,1 and the setting of the moon. You could say it’s also inspired by Button Moon if that’s all you need. It’s not a bad thing, and doesn’t affect your enjoyment of the book, but it’s a bit of an odd claim that’s not needed in my opinion.

I have no major complaints about this book, but I personally wouldn’t choose to read it to a child of mine I was trying to get to fall sleep any time soon!

Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book.

There's more bedtime fun with Where's Tim's Ted? It's Time for Bed! by Ian Whybrow and Russell Ayto while budding adventurers might like Journey to the Moon by Lucio and Meera Santoro
