Penryn successfully (depending on how you look at things) liberated her little sister Paige from the sick experiments of the angels now ruling over the world. Believed to be dead at the start of the story, Penryn finds herself at the control centre of the human resistance movement whose treatment of her sister and other victims of angel brutality seems less than human. In order to protect her sister she feels the need to leave the resistance and risk life in the nearly destroyed world amongst predators such as angels and even more horrifying creations spawned by the angels. All the while Pen clings to the hope of a reunion with Raffe, the angel responsible for saving her life and true owner of the powerful sword she carries with her.

World After is the follow-up to Angelfall, a book which took me by surprise with its fantastic pacing, well delivered horror and even its surprisingly endearing romance. Angelfall set off at a blistering pace throwing the reader into a world of chaos and destruction from the outset and facing us with the tearing apart of a family and its impact upon our heroine Penryn. This sequel follows on perfectly from the events of the first story and sets off at a surprisingly leisurely pace. Penryn has been reunited with her sister and mother and seems to be in the most secure place available considering the plight of the world, so the pace makes sense but I began to become worried that the story was going to overdo the relief and the pining felt towards Raffe. This pining expressed itself largely in an overabundance of dream sequences which although serving a very important purpose became a little tiresome.

The slow pace and slightly annoying dream sequences are more than atoned for by the story as it continues. I was whisked up by the story at some point and then it never let up, with escape attempts, fight scenes and berserker angels and real tension and emotional attachment throughout. Horror scenes and action scenes and even again the romantic scenes are exhilarating towards the end of the book. The horrific creatures that have been created are truly hideous and scary and the writing of them does not hold back on the gore or the fear that they cause. The fight scenes feel gritty and realistic which helps the reader to believe that Pen is capable of what is written and that she is perfectly capable of fighting above her weight. When the pining ends the romance within the story is cheeky and the relationship builds naturally meaning that even I enjoyed the heart felt moments and the will they, won’t they nature of certain scenes.

Penryn is a fantastic heroine and although I worried at the beginning that she may have lost a little of her spark, she continues to develop in this story and at its conclusion I am eager to read more of her. It is obvious that the author has great things in mind for Penryn and little by little more is revealed about her and hints are given about her future (which seems likely to be even more epic than what has happened to date). She is a fierce and feisty character and is great fun to cheer on; the scrapes and full blown battles she finds herself in are tense and thrilling and written with attitude; she is a genuinely exciting and engaging female lead in a similar vein to The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen.

World After is a great sequel that felt over all too quickly because of how readable it became and how much I want to read more about Pen and the world with its angel overlords. Penryn and the End of Days is a series that's continuing to live up to the great promise it showed with Angelfall and showing the potential to become a truly epic story; this is one that I do not want to miss and I will be reading every addition to the series.

If you haven’t already you must read Angelfall as it's essential before reading this and is a fantastically enjoyable and addictive read. For a different imagining of a post-apocalyptic world with a strong female lead try Shadowlark by Meagan Spooner.
