Summary: Another light-hearted Winnie The Witch book, this time based in space, where those pesky space rabbits are bothering Winnie and Wilbur. Korky Paul's illustrations are excellent as always.

Winnie The Witch is back, and this time she has a hankering to go into space. With a wave of her magic wand, she creates a rocket, and she and her cat Wilbur are whizzing along from planet to planet, exploring the cosmos, and getting into all sorts of trouble with space rabbits.

Much like previous Winnie books, Winnie In Space is a wild and thrilling ride, with plot by the bucketload, action aplenty, and lashings of silliness. There's a little more text than the average picture book, which makes it a great choice for children who are on the cusp of reading for themselves. The vocabulary is clear enough to be accessible for the littler ones too.

As always, Korky Paul's illustrations are great. Every page has so much going on that you could spend ages looking at them, taking in all the excitement and giggling. I particularly enjoyed seeing the space rabbits munch their way through the rocket - it's big action-packed scenes like that which really benefit from Korky Paul's high-octane style. As a nice addition, each page includes a picture of a planet (and Pluto), along with its astronomical symbol. It's not pitched as an educational book in the slightest, but as an aside, it works well.

Winnie In Space is a light-hearted read, rather than a deep story to be treasured forever, but it's no mere bubblegum. There's an underlying quality in both text and pictures that makes it a fine choice. Recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
