Winnie the Witch is something of an institution in children’s literature these days, and with good reason. From the very first book in the series Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul managed to capture a wonderful sense of fun, mischief and adventure. This addition to the series is no exception.

Winnie’s Big Bad Robot is a really nice premise in particular, with Winnie creating a robot which she doesn’t realise is going to be both big and bad. He causes all kinds of mayhem when he gets hold of Winnie’s wand, turning everything in his path into robots, including Winnie! The question is, will Wilbur be able to save the day?

What I always enjoy about Winnie the Witch books is that they have stories universal and entertaining enough to keep younger children enthralled but the illustrations are such that they cross over well into reception class age too, feeling grown up enough to be an excellent transitional stage book for more confident young readers.

There is so much detail in the drawings that you can easily spend ages looking at each page, making it a wonderful book to share as a family or with a class. I also like the way Winnie goes to the library at the start of the book, it’s so important that children are aware of libraries, especially in the current climate, so for me this was such a nice touch.

Overall, this is a really entertaining book which the whole family is bound to enjoy reading together, and which I’m sure will also help developing readers start to find the joy of books.

If you're looking for some more of Winnie and Wilbur's adventures, then look no further than Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin.
