Who Needs Nappies? Not Me! is the latest release in the Everybody Potties! series from Justine Avery. This series of fun picture books aims to take the pain out of potty training children and replace it with some fun. It's a worthy aim, as any frustrated parent will tell you.

In Everybody Pees! (Everybody Potties!) by Justine Avery and Naday MeldovaEverybodyy Pees! she helped to destigmatise bodily functions in the eyes of a child. Just as you pee, your mum pees, your grandad pees. Just as your family pees, doctors pee and pilots pee and even the president pees. Just as humans pee, monkeys pee (up a tree) and moles pee (underground). In Who Needs Nappies? the aim is to go a step further and explain that potty training accidents are just missteps along a journey to getting rid of those pain-in-the-neck nappies for good. They don't matter; they're not a reason to rush back to nappy safety. They're just blips. That you can laugh at and once you've laughed, you'll know not to do them again.

So don't worry if you make a wee-wee puddle or you play with the toilet paper, or you wipe with your hands. It's not the end of the world. Just don't do it again and you too can shout Not me! and you'll be one step closer to saying goodbye to doing all that toilet business all by yourself, like everyone else does.

Avery is right to call this a chant-along book. Every child can go through the pratfalls of potty training and join in with the repetitive shout of Not me! at all the various scenarios and it will work to reduce shame and temper outbursts as a child goes through the process. It takes the sting out of what can be a trying time for parent and child alike.

Illustrator Seema Amjad has produced a loud and proud series of pictures which also signal lack of shame and stigma and, dare I say it, fun? Her children all have big bright eyes and mischievous faces even when things are not going smoothly with regard to potty issues. But the sense of pride when they've succeeded is palpable. I love these pictures. They're big and bold and look at family life with love and humour.

Another fab production from the Avery stable!

Other entertaining books making potty training actually look like fun include Monkey Business by Smriti Prasadam-Halls and David Wojtowycz and Have You Seen My Potty? by Mij Kelly. You can read more about Justine Avery here.
