The Trap is the third and final book in this sequence about a world in which vampires rule and humans are hepers, eaten almost to extinction.

We left Gene and Sissy, along with Epap and David, on the train that delivers hepers from the Mission to the City, destined for the Ruler's feast table. Gene now knows that he and Sissy form the Origin, the cure that will return Duskers to humans formulated by Gene's missing scientist father. But is that all there is to it? Where did the Duskers come from? Can Gene and Sissy end their plague? Will they all make it out alive? And what of Ashley June, newly turned to Dusker? What does she know that Gene and Sissy don't?

I have had some problems with this trilogy which you can see in my reviews of the first and second books. They principally revolve around the worldbuilding, which I feel can be somewhat flakey and inconsistent. Even so, the action has been so fantastic and the character relationships so believable, that I haven't minded too much. And, in this final volume, everything is so urgent and exciting that I completely forgot all my reservations and ended up, all guns blazing, in a weekend of hell-for-leather, incredibly satisfying reading.

Fukuda deals with the growing love between Gene and Sissy very well, and with the loyalty Gene still feels for Ashley June, despite the fact that she is now a Dusker. It's there and it's affecting, but it never overshadows the plot. And, at last, we meet the Ruler, who is deliciously camp and horrid in the best vampiric tradition. But mostly, it's action - gloriously bloody action.

I don't want to give away too much but the end is very satisfying, following a terrifying plot twist that I got to grips with only a page or two before the reveal. Most loose ends are tied up and it feels right that the ones that aren't are left as the kind of mysteries that life deals us - the kind that make life painful but worth living. Gene gets most of his answers but not quite all. And not everyone gets to live happily ever after.

It's fast and furious and exciting and sometimes it's unforgiving. And it'll make you think about unintended consquences. That's all I'm sayin'. You'll have to read The Trap if you want to know what I mean!

If you fancy some undead action after all this bitey-bitey stuff, you could look at Zom-B by Darren Shan.
