Summary: The newest Littlest Dinosaur book is our favourite yet, with plenty to laugh at as the dinosaur's bad mood plays out. There's a strong and useful message too, but it works wonderfully as a story in its own right.

After the littlest dinosaur's earlier adventures, Camilla Reid takes hold of the writing reins, whilst Michael Foreman offers up his beautiful illustrations as always. This time, the dinosaur is in a bit of a bad mood, being rude to his dad, shouting at his siblings, and ruining his meal. His mum sends him to sit on the naughty rock, but he's in for quite a surprise when he gets there...

I know original should usually be best, but The Naughty Rock is my favourite Littlest Dinosaur book yet. I love seeing the dinosaur getting his strop on and telling his dad But I just need to you play with me to make me HAPPY! As he stomps from place to place, his bad mood builds and builds. They're issues that young kids can identify with and laugh at - nothing dreadful, just in a bit of a grumpy mood. The wise advice from his new-found friend is offered gently, and the happy ending wraps everything up neatly without ever veering into unnecessary schmaltziness.

It's a book with a clear message, but it's thoroughly enjoyable as a story in its own right. Michael Foreman's sweet illustrations set the mood perfectly. They tread between the hot cheeks (and humour) of anger, sadness at being told off, the warm heart of learning the benefits of apologising, and all wrapped up with a general cuteness that draws you in. There are plenty of small creatures and interesting prehistoric plants woven into the mix, to make it all enjoyable to pore over.

The story is slightly longer than the average picture book, making it ideal for book fans just on the cusp of reading for themselves. The vocabulary is clear, but with an engaging style that will maintain the attention of slightly younger kids too. It's lots of fun. Warmly recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

We Are Wearing Out The Naughty Step by Mick Inkpen also features a naughty rock... sorry, step. Lively Elizabeth! by Mara Bergman and Cassia Thomas also deals with issues of naughtiness, and Super Dooper Jezebel by Tony Ross shows what can happen if you're too good.
