|summary=''The Girl at the Window'' is a wonderful ghost story, a dark revenge tragedy, but also a tale of love so strong it transcends death. The pages bulge with brooding sweeping landscapes, atmospheric buildings, and deviant, dark characters. Deliciously gothic, a passionate homage to the Brontes and a unique and beguiling work that has hope at its heart. I loved every page.

Trudy Heaton is going home, to a house where her roots burrow back through the centuries and to a mother she hasn't spoken to for sixteen years. Home, her refuge, Ponden Hall, where she can heal herself and try to come to terms with the traumatic loss of her husband. She needs to build bridges with her mother and convince her grieving son that his father is dead. Where better than the house full of light and shadow, that nurtured her throughout her childhood?

The land sold off, the hall is falling into disrepair, and her funds are dwindling but Trudy knows this is where she and her son are meant to be. As she prepares the house for renovation, past residents reach out to one of their own across the centuries. As they reveal the sorrow and pain of the past, Trudy discovers the darkness her mother has always known.

As the mystery of past Heatons unfold, we get to see the very best and the very worst of human nature. The central characters motivated by pure love and hope make this a magical read. Trudy, strong and adventurous, despite her sense of loss only wants to protect her son. Then there is her mother, who beneath her dour and eccentric exterior has many interesting layers to uncover.

Coleman evokes the atmosphere of a true gothic novel but sets it firmly in the here and now. She creates a wonderful, relatable tale of everyday people facing extraordinary events.
