Gossip seeps through the mists of sixteenth century Scotland, adding more ripples to the pool of intrigue surrounding the infant Queen Mary. Lymond is back. He is an outlaw and a traitor, the black sheep of the Crawford family and the shame of his brother, Earl Culter. Returning from the slave galleys - yes, yes, I know! - he gathers around him a band of men, but for what purpose? Does he seek reconciliation? Or revenge? Or rebellion? Or does he seek to clear his name?

|comment= This review is right on the nose! It's my first Dunnett--a gift from a friend: all six of the Lymond Chronicles. To be honest, I was not looking forward to about 8 pounds of books concerning 16th century Scotland. I was wrong; the book is wonderful! I am a retired professor of American literature (thus the time to read way outside my field), and I have found another writer to cherish. Five gold stars from me!

|comment= You will love the one set in Turkey! Actually, Dunnett seems to have a bigger following your side of the pond than ours. A shame for we Brits to come second in appreciation of such a home-grown talent!}}{{comment |name=Annette |verb= said|comment=Led to this review from your review of the [[To Defy A King by Elizabeth Chadwick|Elizabeth Chadwick book]] (which looks interesting!). Dorothy Dunnett was one of my favourite authors. I read the Lymond saga first and then The House of Niccolo series. Both are amazing sets of books, with twists and turns everywhere. She had a wonderful way with a story and I miss looking out for new books from her. }}{{comment|name=Janet McCourt|verb=said|comment=The Lymond Chronicles are to be republished in the UK in late 2017 - hurrah!
