Oh my goodness, whatever can we do? There's an evil pea on the loose in the supermarket, causing havoc wherever he goes! He has sticky-plastered poor carrot to the conveyor belt and drawn a moustache and glasses on broccoli, and poor old cucumber has been mummified with a bandage! Still, try to calm your frayed nerves because, never fear, Supertato is here to save the day!

This is a pacey, fun read that we thoroughly enjoyed here, in spite of the fact that neither of my kids are much good when it comes to vegetables. Bright and colourful throughout I love the style of the writing, with lots of authorial questions and plenty of opportunities to do your best impressions of an abused carrot or a malicious pea, complete with an evil laugh, Mwah hahaha! The story is delightfully silly. The evil pea has escaped from the freezer and is causing trouble with all the other vegetables. Supertato, fortunately, is on hand to save the day and, of course, he does so with the aid of a jelly! There is everything here, slapstick, good versus evil, mild peril and the inevitable happy ending. The ending actually came with a full belly laugh from me - I'll leave it for you to discover why!

The illustrations help the story along enormously of course. Supertato is fabulous, with his super belt around his rather plump middle, and his bandit-like eye mask. Evil pea is great, and thoroughly evil throughout! I personally really like the broccoli who gets drawn on! I also like that Supertato's superpowers in his case consist of using a wet flannel and some soapy water! The pictures are bright, with lots of primary colours and plenty to see on each page. As well as being a super bedtime story, or any time story really, this would also be really fun to read aloud to a group of children - probably older pre-schoolers and those in reception and year one would be most appreciative. And who knows, maybe they'll be lured into the delights of enjoying vegetables at dinnertime too?

For more laugh-out-loud fun from Sue Hendra, we'd definitely recommend trying No-Bot, The Robot With No Bottom by Sue Hendra. You might also enjoy Bonkers about Beetroot by Cath Jones and Chris Jevons.
