In The Barrel, anything is possible for the right price, and no one knows this better than criminal mastermind, Kaz Brekker. When Kaz is offered a chance at a perilous mission that could turn his poverty-stricken life upside down, he is determined to see the task fulfilled - but he won't be able to do it alone.

Inej, The Wraith, Ketterdam's best spy.
Matthias, an escaped convict searching for his ticket to freedom.
Wylan, the wealthy merchant's son with a lot to learn about villainy.
Nina, a Heartrender who can break necks with nothing more than a glance.
Jesper, the humorist who can't walk away from a wager.

In a world of constant turmoil and gang rivalry, where the Grisha are under constant duress for their superhuman abilities, Kaz and his companions must achieve the impossible, because here, what makes you different makes you dangerous. Together they must break into the Ice Court, a notorious military base that has never been breached. Six deadly convicts, one impossible mission. Together, they are the six crows…

If you have not yet read one of Leigh Bardugo's books, resolve to rectify that oversight immediately! The writing is enchanting and otherworldly, filled with plot twists and cliff hangers to keep you in constant suspense.

In my opinion, the most outstanding feature of this story is the characters and their development. I utterly adored Kaz because he is everything I love in a character - intelligent, witty, sarcastic, determined and unusual. All six of the protagonists are unique and have so much background that Bardugo reveals gradually throughout the book; I felt as though I were getting to know the characters and consequently felt more connected to them and invested in their personal stories/dilemmas. I was pleasantly surprised to find the romance in this book was subtle and endearing rather than dramatic.

Being an avid reader of the fantasy genre, I had high hopes for this book, and I was not disappointed: the world is intricate and richly imagined, the characters are unique and the writing is enchanting - all in all, 'Six of Crows' is a daring idea, beautifully executed.

It is not necessary to read Shadow and Bone before 'Six of Crows' in order to understand the story; however, I would definitely recommend 'Shadow and Bone' to any fans of fantasy, as well as Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.
