Reading to children does not have to be a passive experience. Some of the best books have you interacting with the characters found between the pages. Dizzy Dinosaur is not the most sensible of chaps at the best of time, but his errors are only compounded when the reader gets involved. Can we help this clumsy Camarasaurus from falling over too much?

Silly Dizzy Dinosaur introduces us to our eponymous hero as he is walking along nicely, only for us, the readers, to give him a tickle. Being a little unsteady on his feet Dizzy falls straight into a puddle and gets all wet. Over the next 30 pages or so you are going to have to help him out by drying him and perhaps kissing his nose better?

With each double spread having an interactive element, Silly Dizzy Dinosaur is one of the most joyous experiences you can have sharing a book with a child. There is no story as such, but a series of mini disasters caused by the reader trying to help. Blowing on the book forces Dizzy up a tree, but turning the book to help him down makes him land with a bump. Thankfully, Dizzy does not seem to mind too much and everyone is friends at the end.

The interactive nature of the book is what makes it really stand out; although the pages themselves are not tactile, the words encourage you to do many fun things. It is great to see a little one grab the book and turn it, or blow the book a kiss. This toing and froing of the book does mean that it will get kid-handled a little more than most and therefore may tarnish a little quicker than average. This should not be a huge issue as the paper is high quality and binding holds up well.

A fun tale that gets you involved is one thing, but author/illustrator Jack Tickle also needs to make a world that is colourful and enjoyable to look at. This is certainly done and Dizzy himself is a bold character that looks great. Being a clumsy chap he wanders around the pages a lot, sometimes getting up very close. The use of perspective and distance by Tickle really adds to the sense that you the reader are effecting the book directly.

With a great sense of fun and a breezy, chatty style, Silly Dizzy Dinosaur is a fantastic book for an older baby or younger toddler. The parent sharing will have a great time watching their little one interact with the book and when you have a character as daft as Dizzy it hard not to get involved yourself.

More silliness can be found in The Silly Satsuma by Allan Plenderleith, whilst dinosaur fans can check out The Super Swooper Dinosaur by Martin Waddell and Leonie Lord. You might also appreciate The Wolf Who Fell Out of a Book by Thierry Robberecht and Gregoire Mabire.
