Peter T. Hooper doesn't mean to show off, but he is very good at cooking. Some would say he is The Best capital T, capital B. And his signature dish is scrambled eggs. You might think that's quite an easy dish, one with which it's a little hard to showcase one's prowess, but not so. For Peter T. Hooper, what makes his scrambled eggs so super is the choice of egg itself, and he will go out of his way to procure the best of the best from whatever nest.

This may be a new edition, but it's classic Dr Seuss. There are weird and wonderful creatures with bizarre names that are such a joy (!) for reading aloud for the same time – Sala-ma-goox, Long-Legger Kwong, Grickily Gractus. The illustrations are prickly too, and none of the birds look overly friendly, though this could just be due to Peter T. Hooper's goal to rob their eggs. It's a distinctive style, but once you get used to it, it's like coming home to old friends.

It's a fun story with rhymes that fall into largely predictable patterns, and a clear if somewhat questionable mission (is it ok to steal (poach, even) a bird's eggs without asking?) All the birds are new, crazy creatures and there's lots to giggle about as you meet each one. Egg whites that taste like grease? No thank you! And so, Peter's quest continues until he has all the eggs he needs to make his dish truly super.

There are a number of re-releases making their way out at the moment, and they're all bound in matching style so they look nice and neat on next to each other on the bookcase, if that's your thing. Some are a number of short stories, but Scrambled Eggs Super is just one, long story. I did wonder if it was actually a little long, because it's just one story and one long rhyme, so there's nowhere to put in a natural chapter break. There are also no page numbers, so make sure you have a bookmark to hand if you think you might need to put it down. Otherwise, you'll be left remembering that you got up to the part where Peter was about to steal some eggs. Oh, wait…
