Princess Grace is starting her second term at the prestigious Tall Towers academy and the class are preparing for the annual Ballet of the Flowers. Each class member must select a native flower from the island and perform a dance, representing the qualities of their chosen flower. The princesses select the most delicate and beautiful blooms, including water lily, poppy and crocus. But how on earth is Grace, the clumsiest, scruffiest and most unladylike of all the princesses, to choose a flower that reflects her personality?
Grace has more on her mind than just the ballet, though. On one of her walks around the island, she spotted something that looked like a dragon. Of course, nobody will believe her. After all, there haven't been any dragons on the island for years; they were banished long ago...
Princess DisGrace: Second Term at Tall Towers continues where the first book left off and is a wonderful tale of friendship, discovery and being true to yourself. Although the story is light-hearted, it manages to tackle some pretty big issues, including bullying, self-confidence and friendship. A large part of the book deals with Grace's relationship with her two best friends and how it changes when another girl tries to push her way into the group and alienate Grace. I'm sure this will resonate with a lot of readers, who may have had similar experiences.
Grace is a delightful lead character and her rough-and-ready approach to life makes an amusing contrast to her prim and proper fellow students at the academy. Her enemy, Princess Precious, is as toxic as ever and it is quite appropriate that she chooses a poisonous but beautiful flower to represent her personality at the Ballet of the Flowers.
We are also introduced to a new character, the serving girl Hetty, who immediately becomes close friends with Grace, despite her 'low status'. Grace finally has a kindred spirit in Hetty, who becomes like a little sister to her. Younger readers will love her adventurous spirit and sweet personality.
I really enjoyed this book and I am excited to see what Grace's third term has in store for her. The first book had unicorns and fairy godmothers, the second book has dragons; I can't wait to see what will come next! Grace is such a likeable lead character, that the reader will be rooting for her all the way. May she have many more adventures to come. Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy.
