Gelbwasser's writing style is superb and I look forward to reading more from a very talented author - I can't help but hope, though, that the next book she tackles is a lighter read than this!
The other really harrowing read of the year so far for me is the superb debut [[Black Heart Blue by Louisa Reid]] which features another incredibly vile parent. Can I suggest, though, that you don't read it immediately after this one! Break them up with a light read like [[Swim the Fly by Don Calame]],[[Indigo Blues by Danielle Joseph]] or the quite wonderful [[A Most Improper Magick by Stephanie Burgis]] - which is aimed at younger teens and tweens but will restore your faith in families!
