|summary=Incredibly disturbing but very well-written, this is recommended as a thought-provoking book for those with strong stomachs. Parents - discuss it with your kids! Margie Gelbwasser was kind enough to come into Bookbag and chat to us.
}}
Every summer Katie and her sister Julie meet up with Alex and his brother Kyle at a lakeside community in New York. They leave behind their problems - which are legion - and find comfort in each other. But when a dark secret of one of them leaks out, the four are all left reeling by the far-reaching consequences.
The other really harrowing read of the year so far for me is the superb debut Black Heart Blue by Louisa Reid which features another incredibly vile parent. Can I suggest, though, that you don't read it immediately after this one! Break them up with a light read like Swim the Fly by Don Calame, Indigo Blues by Danielle Joseph or the quite wonderful A Most Improper Magick by Stephanie Burgis - which is aimed at younger teens and tweens but will restore your faith in families!
