[[Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin and James Dean|Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons]] was an instant and complete hit in my household when I reviewed it for The Bookbag a few months ago, and it has continued to be so ever since. So I was very excited to receive Pete’s latest adventure, Pete the Cat and the New Guy. It is a lot longer than the last book, but this is not a bad thing and only serves to back up my opinion that these books are suitable for a wide range of reading ages.

Everything about Pete is groovy. From his footwear, to his buttons and on to his camper van. This story is also pretty groovy, as he meets a new guy next door who turns out to be a platypus called Gus. Pete and Gus are looking for something to do, but Gus isn’t as good at a lot of things that Pete is excellent at, but in the words of Pete, ''Don’t be sad, don’t be blue, there is something everyone can do!''

I love the way Pete the Cat always mixes important skills to learn along with fun and quirky stories and illustrations. This story is entirely underpinned not only by the lesson that we are all good at something, but also by an acceptance of all different kinds of people and friends that we meet within our lives.

I think this is a great addition to the series, and  I am very excited to see that there will be a Christmas edition of our funky cat’s escapades.  I think these are a wonderful set of books to both entertain and educate a pretty broad age range of children, and I am more than happy to recommend them to anybody who asks.
