It is a beautiful Polar morning. The sun is shining, the icebergs are glistening, and Pedro decides to start the day with an early morning swim! He gets ready to dive in, tucks in his tummy, point his beak to the sky, and dives high, high, high into the air. But oh dear. He forgot to break the ice before diving in! CRUNCH! But don't worry, with a little help from Nurse Nibbles and his Get Well Friends, he'll soon be feeling better.

Another chart-topper from this award winning author's stable of books, soft toys and merchandising, Pedro The Penguin is a gorgeous tale about a clumsy penguin who bangs his head on the ice while attempting to dive into the water at the South Pole, where he lives.

Clever on lots of levels - introducing kids to a funny little bird that swims underwater and that only lives in cold climates, for one and for two, what can happen if you aren't super careful when it's slippery outside and thirdly the nice lesson in nurturing our friends and loved ones when they are poorly - this is a brightly and intelligently written with stunningly lovely illustration (Mary McQuillan is a clever old stick with a paintbrush!) that captures a child's imagination in lots of good and engaging ways, I heartily recommend this tale for all of the reasons above and more.

Timed at approximately 6 minutes, this also makes a super bed-time read for either a quick storytime or as part of lots of short read stories to make up a whole, longer bedtime story read. Well done Kes Gray... we love Pedro and can't wait to read more of his adventures. And in our house, where we are introducing our 4 year old to the merits of the rather wonderful Sir David Attenborough and the wider world around us, Pedro could not have come along at a better time for the appreciation of Frozen Planet all the more!

For further reading, I would suggest checking out the real wildlife in Don't Invite Dinosaurs To Dinner by Neil Griffiths and Peggy Collins which is also uproariously funny. We also love Tyrannosaurus Drip by Julia Donaldson because you can't help but love someone who puts that much effort into writing an entire story that rhymes or alternatively, you may enjoy Little Penguin Learns to Swim by Dubravka Kolanovic and Eilidh Rose because a penguin story is a fairly irresistible one in the first place.

Finally, a huge thanks to the ladies and gents at Hodder Children's books for sending us this copy to review.
