Old Macdonald had a farm by Pam Adams

Right, so you know all the words to Old Macdonald had a farm? No? You think you know most of them, or roughly how it goes, but probably not in the right order? Ok, so you know that there's a lot of Ee I Ee I O, but apart from that you just try and look as though you're singing – and smile a lot? Right – I have got just the book that you need and it's got some rather clever holes in it.

Yes. Holes.

Old Macdonald is one of those songs that builds up with each repetition, so you have to be paying attention, or be a small child. A small child who's paying attention is going to be unbeatable. On the first page we find that Old Mac (as he's known to his friends for the purpose of this review) has a dog and we establish that this dog goes Bow Wow – rather a lot in fact. On the opposite page there's a picture of the farm with a hole right through to the back which shows the dog. Turn the page over and the hole which revealed the dog now reveals what he said, but now of course, we're on to the sheep – with more noises and more holes in the page.

Sounds complicated? No – it's one of those things which isn't easy to describe but which is very obvious when you see it. It's clever, but it's definitely not complicated. Work your way through the book and you'll have a collection of animals, animal noises and not a lot of friends – but give it to a child and you're going to have a lot of fun. There's the opportunity for lots of play acting and lots of shouting. In fact, if you haven't got a child handy, you really ought to find one.

It's a Child's Play book, so the quality is good, with clear printing and glorious illustrations which leave something else for you to find each time you look. The paper is thick enough to stand quite a lot of handling, despite the cut-outs.

We've seen several other books in the series – There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Five Little Ducks and The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round. They're all of the same quality and great fun for you and your children.

You can get some of these books on Kindle – but I don't understand how you can poke your fingers through the holes?

I'd like to thank the publisher for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

We've recently seen another copy of The Wheels on the Bus. That's great fun too.
